 Council's objectives for Heritage are:

  • to conserve the environmental heritage of Weddin,
  • to conserve the heritage significance of heritage items and heritage conservation area, including associated fabric, settings and views,
  • to conserve archaeological sites,
  • to conserve Aboriginal objects and Aboriginal places of heritage significance

Council has 101 individual items and 3 conservation areas listed in the Weddin Local Environmental Plan 2011.

Heritage Advisor

The Heritage Advisory Service offers free professional advice from Weddin Shire Council's Heritage Advisor who visits Grenfell every second month. The advisory service is available to owners who want to renovate or redevelop private homes or commercial buildings, occupiers of buildings with historical significance, or owners of movable heritage items who want to undertake conservation work.

This advice can include the topics of colour schemes, extensions, verdandahs, awnings and fences as well as more comprehensive advice on the integration of new development in heritage conservation areas.

The free advice which is provided is of a general nature and should be considered as the starting point for more extensive work that may require an architect, builder or designer.

Appointments can be made through Council’s Environmental Services Department.

Small Local Heritage Grants

The aim of the small grants fund is to provide financial assistance to owners of historic properties or within conservation areas to undertake conservation works on their properties. The overall aim being to encourage conservation of the heritage values of the area and to stimulate restoration.

The program applies to rural, village and town places, including private, public and commercial properties. Weddin Shire's heritage values include occupied buildings, outbuildings, industrial structures, ruins, cultural landscapes and significant trees, mining sites, fences, streetscapes and views.

Successful applicants will be reimbursed up to 50% of the cost of conservation. This amount is payable only on completion of the works. Applications for these grants are usually sought around June each year.

Please contact the Environmental Services department for further information.

Grenfell Heritage Study

A comprehensive heritage study of Grenfell's town centre was undertaken by Tropman and Tropman Architects in 1993. The Tropman study-area boundary, which was divided into five precincts, is included below. As a result of the study a number of places in the town centre were recommended for inclusion in Weddin Shire LEP heritage schedule. Some additional places outside the study area were also recommended for listing. See proposed heritage schedule below.

In 2005 Council requested their heritage adviser, Mr Pip Giovanelli to look at buildings and other items in the remaining part of Grenfell and identify additional places of heritage value. The result forms the basis of this study.

Grenfell Main Street Heritage Study

Introduction

This study is presented in 2 volumes:

Volume 1 - comprises this report, which includes Background, Discussion and Recommendations

Volume 2 - is the inventory, which includes a section for each building in Main Street

Background

Grenfell town centre was the subject of a heritage study undertaken in 1993 by Tropman and Tropman Architects.   This study has been prepared by Pip Giovanelli - Heritage and Conservation

Study Areas

This study focuses on the Main Street, which is the commercial hub of Grenfell, and largely follows the boundaries of the Tropman and Tropman study.  Rygate Square and the railway station at the western and railway station at the western end have not been included, as visually they are not part of the Main Street commerial area.  For similar reasons the eastern boundary has been identified as the intersection of Short Street and Burrangong Street.  The numbering system within this Main Street study follows that of the Tropman and Tropman study.
