Weddin Shire Drought Information Night

Weddin Shire Council along with the Member for Cootamundra the Hon Steph Cooke MP and James Cleaver a Rural Support Worker with the Rural Resilience Program at Dubbo, have organised a Drought Information night for the residents of the Weddin Shire.

The night is aimed to provide Shire residents with advice on what is available in terms of funding, assistance, counselling services and to answer any questions the community may have in regards to drought assistance.

Council is inviting all Shire residents to attend the evening.

Weddin Shire Council and contractors will be conducting road sealing approximately 50km south of Forbes on the Newell Highway on the 3rd and 4th December, 2018.

Delays of up to 10 minutes are to be expected during bitumen spraying.

Under 5 Keep em Alive

Weddin Shire Council are introducing, The Under 5 Keep em Alive program as a new safety initiative for all children under 5yrs of age entering both Grenfell and Quandialla Swimming Centres.

The Under 5 Keep em Alive program requires parents or carers to place a red arm band on these high-risk children providing an extra visual tool for supervision for parents, Lifeguard and the general public. The parent or guardians should be actively involved with all water play and the child should always be within arm’s reach.

The local swimming centres already operate under the KEEP Watch @ Public Pools to try and prevent your child from drowning.

Children under 10yrs are not allowed entry unless under the active supervision of a person 18yrs.

Children 0-5 and non-swimmers a parent or guardian is required to be in the water and within arm’s reach at all times.

Children 6-10yrs and weak swimmers require constant active supervision.

Children 11-14 it is recommended that a parent check on them regularly.

Lifeguards are responsible for the overall safety of all patrons within the Centre, but it is the parents and guardians who have the ultimate responsibility to supervise their children.

A lapse in adult supervision was the major risk factor in 100% of toddler drowning deaths last year, so please put down your smart phones, books and have some fun in the sun with your children.

The program will commence on the 3^rd November 2018 and run throughout the 2018/19 swimming season.

CANCELLATION OF PUBLIC MEETING - PROPOSED CLOSURE OF THE GRENFELL RECORD OFFICE

Council and Fairfax representatives met on Thursday 25 October, 2018 to work together to find a solution to the proposed closure of the Grenfell Record Office.

Fairfax representatives advised Council they are introducing a new mobile working model whereby staff will be working possibly one day a week from Cowra and the remainder of the week in Grenfell. Staff will be going out into the community to source news articles for the Grenfell Record which will still be issued twice a week.

Fairfax representatives have agreed to work with Council to find a suitable central site for residents to meet with the Grenfell Record staff on a regular basis.

As a result of these developments the public meeting scheduled for Friday 26 October, 2018 has been cancelled.

Reporting of Mobile Coverage and Digital Connectivity Issues

The NSW Government is working directly with telecommunications service providers to improve mobile and digital connectivity in regional and rural parts of NSW through the $50 million Connecting Country Communities Fund. This fund incorporates the Mobile Black Spots Program and the Regional Digital Connectivity Program.

In order to maximize the chance of investment by telecommunications service providers in infrastructure and solutions within our shire we urge our residents to share your experience with mobile coverage or internet/digital connectivity by completing the questionnaire available at the following website before 15 August 2018.

The questionnaire includes a map to outline the area where the issue is occurring. Obviously the more people we have that complete the questionnaire the better our chance of being seen as a priority area for investment.

Weddin Active Transport Plan Survey

Council is encouraging members of the community to share their ideas on the planning and development of a new Active Transport Plan for Weddin Shire.

The Active Transport Plan is aimed at improving the bicycle and pedestrian network to encourage greater participation in walking and cycling activities throughout the Shire, which can also lead to benefits in community health and wellbeing.

Members of the community are invited to contribute to the formation of the new Active Transport Plan with their ideas on walking, running and riding in the Weddin Shire by completing the Survey or by attending a workshop.

Consultation workshops will be held around the Shire.

'Fit for the Future' Resubmission

Councils 'Fit for the Future' (FFTF) proposal was resubmitted to the Office of Local Government on Friday, 29 July 2016.

The proposal was endorsed by Council at the July 2016 Council Meeting prior to its submission. It is anticipated Council will be advised of the outcome of the reassessment by 30 September 2016.

2016 Weddin Shire Council Election

The Local Government Election for the Weddin Shire Council will be held on Saturday, 10 September 2016.

The elections will be for 9 Councillors representing the entire Shire. The Mayor will be elected by the Councillors at the first meeting of the Council.

Voting on Election Day

It is planned that Polling places will be located at:

Caragabal Public School,
Greenethorpe Soldiers Memorial Hall,
Grenfell Uniting Church Hall and
Quandialla Central School.

Voting before the election

If you are unable to attend a polling place on Election Day, you may be eligible to vote early via Pre-poll or Postal Vote.

You can vote before the Election Day at a pre poll voting office. Information about pre poll locations will be advertised in the lead up to the election.

Applications to make a postal vote can be made to the NSW Electoral Commissioner no later than 5.00pm on Monday 5 September 2016.

Who Can Vote?

It is compulsory for Weddin Shire residents who are on the electoral roll to vote in Council Elections.
If you own a property in the Weddin Shire but you do not reside in it, you may also be able to vote. However, you must send an application to the General Manager of the Council to appear on the non-resident owners, occupiers and rates paying lessees electoral roll. Voting is not compulsory for electors on this role.

Claims for inclusion in the Non-Residential Rolls

If you are an owner, rate-paying lessees or occupier of rateable land, which is not your primary residence, you or a nominee may be entitled to enrol on the Non-Residential Rolls for the election to be held on 10 September 2016.

The following forms can be lodged to claim inclusion on the Non-Residential Rolls. Both forms contain information relating to the eligibility criteria for a claim.

Non-Residential rolls lapse after each local government election and therefore it is necessary to reapply if you would like to be included on the roll for the September 2016 election. The application from must be completed and submitted to Council prior to 6pm on Monday 1 August 2016.

Claims may be sent by mail to PO Box 125, Grenfell NSW 2810, delivered by hand to Weddin Shire Council Chambers Corner of Camp and Weddin Streets Grenfell, emailed to or by facsimile to (02) 6343 1203.

Weddin Shire Council Record of Markers Programme

Council has been progressing the development of Weddin Shire Council – Record of Markers Programme through its Heritage Committee. Many residents may be aware of the existence of Markers of Local Events, Persons, Associations and Structures

Markers have social, cultural, historic or political relevance to the past and present people of the Shire and/or to the wider community.

They indicate how an event, person or place contributed to, and help shape, the Weddin Shire. Persons could be cultural, literary, social, community and political figures.

Their installation indicates that the community of that era held the event, person or structure in high esteem to warrant having a marker.

As knowledge about such markers fade from living memory, they can be easily forgotten and lost.

The Record purpose is to capture tangible evidence of the civic history and everyday traditions, and to ensure the Weddin Community has a record of events, persons, organisations, places and structures before they are forgotten or lost.

The Record goal is to create a historic record for future generations.
The Record will add to the resources of the Museum and could be used in promotional and interpretation materials - such as a self-guided walk between O’Brien’s Hill and the Railway station, open days, lectures and seminars, publications, brochures, exhibitions and to entice curiosity and interest about Weddin Shire on the Council web site.

Markers could be:-

From the recent past or from decades back
- such as a plaque recording when the lights were turned on (as in Canowindra)
Highly personalised
- such as a plaque on a bird bath to a local nurse in the grounds of a regional hospital.
An association with a building or organisation
- such as a foundation stone or organisation identifier
Obvious or innocuous or quirky : tiny or more impressive
Movable (and hence have the potential for being stolen for e.g. their metal content)
- such as the 1920-40s petrol caps once located in the pavements
Furniture or fixtures that related to specific civic properties
- such as items in the Council Chambers foyer or in a local hall
Memorials relating specifically to the civic history of the Shire
- such as artworks, decorative arts and historical items

EXHIBITION AND COMPETITION

The Year of Used Tyres

WASTE TO ART is a community art exhibition and competition open to all local residents who reside in the NetWaste region. It showcases creative works made from reused & recyclable waste materials. The aim is to challenge peoples’ perceptions about ‘rubbish’ and to celebrate the reuse and recycling of waste through arts and crafts.

Waste to Art provides an innovative approach to waste education, invites schools and community groups to take up the challenge and create a new life for materials that would otherwise have been thrown away, considered useless: bottle tops, plastic bags, old bus tickets, parts from rusty farm machinery, old horse shoes, buttons, and the list goes on. Instead of ending up in landfill these waste materials can be turned into fantastic works of art.

The Competition will include categories to challenge and stimulate the imagination.

Entry Forms to be completed and handed to Weddin Shire Council by Friday 29th April 2016 and artworks to be handed in on Tuesday 3rd May 2016 between 2-3 pm at the Grenfell HUB. Exhibition/Opening will be on Wednesday 4th May 2016 at 3.30pm.

REGIONAL COMPETITION & EXHIBITION
Lachlan Shire Council will host a Regional Competition from June 25 – July 18 2016. Winning artworks from our local exhibition will be transported to the Regional Competition.
