Council News - 12 October 2016

In regards to the recent wet weather and damage to Council’s road network Council is currently seeking a Natural Disaster Declaration and once declared will apply for flood damage grant funding.

The provision of the grant funding will allow the commencement of flood damage roadworks on various main and local roads in the Shire.

In regards to traffic flow the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) have advised that traffic has been diverted from Marsden on the Newell Highway through Grenfell from 4pm Thursday 6 October, 2016 until floodwaters subside north of Marsden.

Council’s Deputy Mayor Cr Best and Director Engineering Mr Bill Twohill will be attending the Australian Local Government Association’s (ALGA) Local Roads and Transport Congress in Toowoomba, Queensland from 9 - 11 November, 2016.

A key role of events like the Roads Congress is to help the ALGA Board to develop informed policies that positively impact communities across the country. These have recently included new funding for bridges, a longer term commitment to the Roads to Recovery program as well as a massive injection of extra funding for that program which Weddin Shire has benefitted from in recent years.

The Roads Congress will be an important opportunity to engage with the Government on how its policies will impact on the provision and maintenance of local roads as well as the broader infrastructure and transport agenda particularly at a time when large parts of NSW has been affected by the recent floods.

Council’s works program is continuing and the following works have been completed or are currently in progress:

  • General Maintenance
  • Sealed Driftway Road
  • Sealed Ballendene Road
  • Maintenance graded Barkers Lane, Goodes Lane and Dunkleys Lane
  • Maintenance on various roads – patching, drainage and signs
  • Repaired major scour on Peaks Creek Road
  • Resheeted Berendebba Lane
  • Relocated taxi rank and removed old taxi rank

Various works have been delayed due to the wet weather however Stage 2 of the Greenethorpe-Bumbaldry road construction commenced last Monday and Blacks Bridge construction is to commence as scheduled in January 2017 with preliminary works already commenced.

There is certainly a lot happening in the next year which is excellent as these events are very important to the economic and social fabric of our Shire.

Council has received advice from Sport and Recreation that the Local Sport Grant Program opened for applications on 26 September and will close 11 November 2016. The program will provide $50,000 per NSW electorate for local sport club projects.

The program aims to increase regular and on-going participation opportunities in sport.

Organisations must contribute to the project, the higher the contribution the more favourable it will be looked upon. This can be a financial contribution or through use of voluntary labour, donated materials and/or equipment or other resources directly related to the project.

Council has also received advice from Local Government NSW that nominations for the Young Achievers Awards are now open.

Young people aged up to 29 years, who are actively involved in the local or broader community can be nominated to receive NSW/ACT Young Achiever Awards.

Young people can be nominated for their achievements across six categories:

  • Arts and Fashion
  • Leadership
  • Community Service
  • Aboriginal Education
  • Environment and Sustainability
  • Small Business Achiever

The Art Gallery’s new exhibition is ‘Shades of Light’ which is an eclectic collection of photographs, photographic art and digital illustrations by Roslyn Elms, and handpainted porcelain by Elaine Dowd. The exhibition is on display until 20 November, 2016.

The Gallery’s opening hours are Monday to Friday 10am – 4pm, Saturday 10am to 3pm & Sunday 10am to 2pm.

The next film to be screened at the Grenfell Cinema will be “Me Before You” at 2.00 pm, 19 October 2016.

DA 43/2016

Council has received an Application DA 43/2016 for Proposed Shed with Awning, 3 Silos, Office and Amenities for Storage Facility for Grain – Minor processing and packing at Lots 1-6 Sec 35 in DP 758473 & Lot 1 in DP 539199, Cnr South & Brundah Streets, Grenfell.

Inspection:      The application DA No. 43/2016 may be viewed between the hours of 9.00 am to 4.00 pm from Wednesday 28 September to Wednesday 19 October 2016 at the Council’s Office, Camp Street, Grenfell.

Council proposes to name the access road to Bogolong Dam as Bogolong Dam Road.

Comments on the proposed naming of the road will be received in writing to the General Manager up until 2 November, 2016.
