Weddin Shire Council is a member of the Lachlan Valley Weeds Advisary Committee and aims to achieve the control, and eventual eradication of noxious weeds within the Weddin Shire area.
Noxious weeds are categorised according to what action is required to control them. This takes into consideration the extent of the weed, available control methods and the weeds' importance.
The five categories are:
- Class 1 - A weed that poses a potentially serious threat to primary production or the environment and is not present in the Shire or is present only to a limited extent. Class 1 weeds must be eradicated from the land and the land must be kept free of these plants. Class 1 weeds are "notifiable" and a range of restrictions on their sale and movement exist. There are 3 Class 1 declared weeds that are problematic in the Weddin Shire.
- Class 2 - A weed that poses a potentially serious threat to primary production or the environment of a region to which the order applies and is not present in the region or is present only to a limited extent. Class 2 weeds must be eradicated from the land and the land must be kept free of these plants. Class 2 weeds are "notifiable" and a range of restrictions on their sale and movement exist. There are 2 Class 2 declared weeds that are problematic in the Weddin Shire.
- Class 3 - A weed that poses a serious threat to primary production or the environment of an area to which the order applies, is not widely distributed in the area and is likely to spread in the area or to another area. Class 3 weeds must be fully and continuously suppressed and destroyed. There are 2 Class 3 declared weeds that are problematic in the Weddin Shire.
- Class 4 - A weed that poses a threat to primary production, the environment or human health, is widely distributed in an area to which the order applies and is likely to spread in the area or to another area. The growth and spread of Class 3 weeds must be controlled according to the specific measures detailed in a management plan published by the local control authority. There are 22 Class 4 declared weeds that are problematic in the Weddin Shire.
- Class 5 - A weed that is likely, by its sale or the sale of its seeds or movement within the Shire or an area of the Shire, to spread in the Shire or outside the Shire. There are no legislative requirements to control existing plants of Class 5 weeds however, the weeds are "notifiable" and a range of restrictions on their sale and movement exists. There are 3 Class 5 declared weeds that are problematic in the Weddin Shire.
