The Library publishes a Newsletter every six weeks or so summarizing events that have taken place since the last Newsletter and listing all the new stock acquired in that period.
GRENFELL AND DISTRICT PUBLIC LIBRARY NEWSLETTER 15th August, 2009 As usual it has been a busy time since the publication of the last Newsletter in mid-June. Main project for the period was weeding the print collections to ‘freshen up’ the shelves and ease congestion. There had been no formal weeding programme carried out since 2007 so it was well past time … Over a thousand items went including nearly 500 adult fiction books, just over 100 adult paperbacks, 120 large print books and 150 magazines. The large print books went to a neighbouring library, the adult fiction and paperbacks were sold (with the proceeds returning as part of the new office desk!) and some of the magazines were given to a Shire school. With nearly 100 items added on average each month it won’t be long before the spaces are filled! The entrants in the State Library-sponsored Drug Information @ Your library quizzes met at the library for afternoon tea and to receive their prizes on 6th July. They were Catherine Fennell and James Westwood, Elaine and Jessica Pereira, and Sue and James Seymour. The next morning a number of Housebound members and residents at the MPS visited, inspecting the new library and the Art Gallery and watching a short DVD in the Cinema before partaking of morning tea. They really enjoyed the film. Students from Class 3-6 from the Quandialla Central School visited the library on 19th June as part of day-long excursion in Grenfell looking at various Council facilities. Neriissa Kinnear from The Henry Lawson High School along with Mrs Barbara Mitton also spent some time in the library on several occasions in June as part of a community outreach programme. (They remain the only people in the last fifty years to see me actually skip with a skipping rope!!!! – Nerissa got a good laugh out of that …) The librarian represented the library as guest speaker at the Hospital Auxiliary Annual Meeting on 12th July, outlining the benefits of the new building for users, staff and the town in general. The end of the financial year always means report time and the librarian has published a summary report which was mailed out to all Shire residents in late July and prepared a report on the Book vote expenditure for 2008/9. The latter revealed slight under-spending this year overall but increases in adult fiction, nonfiction and reference, and DVD purchasing. The biggest fall was in spending on talking books but those in cassette format are becoming increasingly difficult to source. In the last few days the Public Library Statistics for 2007/8 have arrived and they show that the library has maintained its per capita ranking in most of the key performance indicators over what has been a fairly tumultuous period. Of the 97 local government libraries across the state Grenfell ranked on a per capita basis 31st in expenditure on library stock (32nd the previous year), 15th in number of items held (13th), 28th in acquisitions (20th), 21st in discards (15th), and – the one that hurts – 63rd in circulation per capita (60th). It would be nice to see that last one improve ….. The library has recently subscribed to YourTutor, an online homework help and coaching service. There has been a delay, our Client Details Form having been lost somewhere in transit, but the service will be beginning as soon as the tele-training for the librarian can be arranged. This is a free service targeting upper primary and secondary ages, and allows members to gain online help in a number of curriculum areas. There are also plans to have a regular baby/toddler storytime programme presented by one of the local Early Childhood Nurses but using library resources. This will be an excellent follow-up to our ‘Giftpaks for Babies’ programme. And some sort of formalized family history research support is also under negotiation, although the librarian is currently a little distracted by her annual Show involvement … A number of people have registered interest in being involved, either as a tutor or someone who would value assistance. It is planned to subscribe to Ancestry.com although this may not now happen until next year. The librarian attended a two-hour workshop on utilizing State Archives records, particularly the records kit that is available in a number of libraries in the state including Young and Parkes, on 24th June and came back with a number of ideas about how to make those records more accessible. A number of research guides for the Archives are available in the Local Family History Room for reference, and specific enquiries can be sent to libraries holding the kit. It seems a long time since the Summer Reading Club now but the Summer Reading Club Awards Afternoon Tea is scheduled for 7th September, and it will have been worth the delay because our special guest will be noted children’s author, Richard Harland, whose new Worldshaker series is to be published in the United Kingdom early next year. Richard will be providing an entertainment segment and also presenting the certificates. He will be guest speaker at the Lions Club meeting that night and also present two sessions at The Henry Lawson High School the following morning so will have a busy time in Grenfell. Have you noticed the smart new brochure holder just to the right of the library entrance? That is the latest purchase for the library by the Friends of Grenfell Library. The Friends are also buying a desk for the librarian’s office to match the existing administration area furniture, and purchasing some display wall tiles for the children’s corner and local family history room and some additional chairs is also under consideration. The Friends are catering for the Summer Reading Club Awards Afternoon Tea and also conducting their traditional Father’s Day Raffle at the moment so it is a busy time for them. The Annual Meeting of the Friends will be held in the Library on 22nd September and new members are ALWAYS welcome.
